computercare is changing 21-07-2025
After a few years of sub-contracting for I.T companies around the UK we went into business in February 1997 under the name of PC Support & Networking. We have since supported trade and private customers for close on 30 years. Our goal always being customer satisfaction in what is a very competitive and evolving market. We started the maintenance and installation business purely by accident while at the time developing small computer programs as a hobby. With a steady flow of new customers on the maintenance side we named the company “PC Support & Networking”. Not really a name we were satisfied with but at the time the company was focussing on offering Network Services which was generally something which was hard to find without bringing in teams from companies like IBM. Granted, much of our work entailed basic networking functionality within small and medium sized business as technologies were in their infancy as was the internet where very few small businesses were online. We didn’t have a team of dedicated engineers, but we were likely the first in the region to implement “Lan and Wan” environments for smaller based companies. With newer technologies being developed we engaged in connecting business who had multiple offices. Beginning with dial up and later “ISDN” we worked with very limited bandwidth. This was not without its headaches as the delays in transition speeds were basic at best. Tech manufacturers would promote advancements as the way forward, but like everything in I.T the theoretical speeds and reliability were highly exaggerated. Covering costs for equipment, alongside our client expectation were always a difficult task. We were later offered equipment directly from “DLink” who asked us to test their equipment in working environments. An interesting development was a Wi-Fi test between Selby Town Hall and the end of Scott Road. We managed to successfully link devices with relatively little interference, which wouldn’t be possible using such equipment today. We tested but dropped the idea as we still didn’t find the connections sufficient to continue within a working environment.
